Why I joined, why I stay .... a series in members' own words
Shortly after my husband died in 2000, I realized I had to make a new life for myself and expand my circle of friends and acquaintances. Where to find like-minded, intelligent women who cared about their community? AAUW, of course!
Not only have I made some good friends with common interests, I've had the opportunity learn new skills by taking positions within the Branch. I had never written a newsletter or created and maintained a website, but through AAUW I've learned these and other skills. My first task was as branch secretary, which quickly gave me a chance to get to know everyone as well as the workings of the branch -- I highly recommend it!
Now, I can't imagine life without my AAUW book group. This year, I helped interview the Tech Trek camper candidates, and it was a joyous and eye-opening experience. I'm looking forward to helping AAUW-OP expand our public policy awareness and collaboration with other women's organizations.
